The OSCAR-LOWeFLOW™ (OS-LF) is a treatment and dispersal system that requires only 12” of soil to restrictive layer, has the smallest footprint of any technology available, and there is NO UV light! The OSCAR (Onsite Sand Coil Area Recharge) is an onsite sewage disposal and disinfection component when used with the LOWeFLOW™ treatment system. The OSCAR is comprised of a 6” layer of C-33 sand media and a series of pre-assembled Netafim Bioline™ drip tubing coils. The sand media is placed on a prepared soil surface. OSCAR coils are then placed on the sand media and then are covered with another 6” of sand media. The sand/soil interface is the discharge point of the treated wastewater. Vertical separation is measured from the original soil surface to the restrictive layer.

A 500 gpd LOWeFLOW filter. The LOWeFLOW™ system is a recirculating gravel filter with a loading rate of 25 g/ft2/d.

System Description

The OSCAR-LOWeFLOW™ treatment system is comprised of a recirculation filter, a septic tank, recirculation/mixing tank, headworks, discharge/clarifier tank, and the OSCAR unit.
Wastewater is collected in a standard septic tank where gross solids are settled out and primary treatment occurs. Septic tank effluent flows from the septic tank into the recirculation tank. Liquid in the recirculation tank is mixed with treated filtrate from the gravel filter. The mixed liquid is dosed to a drip tubing network called a Coil in the top of the LOWeFLOW ™ filter.

Treated filtrate from the LOWeFLOW™ filter flows by gravity back to the recirculation tank through the splitter valve. The position of the splitter valve determines the flow path of the filtrate. When the liquid level in the recirculation tank is high enough to seat the splitter valve, all of the filtrate passes into the clarifier/discharge tank, otherwise, all of the returning filtrate returns to the recirculation tank. Liquid accumulates in the clarifier/discharge tank. Liquid from the clarifier/discharge tank is timed dosed to the OSCAR coils where final treatment and dispersal occurs.

Design flows of the OSCAR-LOWeFLOW™ system range from 240 gpd to 100,000 gpd.

Treatment Level Expectations

The OSCAR-LOWeFLOW™ system was tested under National Sanitation Foundation’s standard 40 protocol and the Washington State Department of Health’s fecal coliform testing requirements. Average treatment level results for the six month test were:
• 5 mg/l CBOD₅
• 9 mg/l TSS
• 27 fecal coliform colonies/100 ml, MPN
• Turbidity ranged from 1-2 NTU

OSCAR II

The OSCAR-II system has been developed and approved to allow virtually any treatment technology to used in conjunction with the OSCAR system. Prior to OSCAR-II the only treatment technology approved for use with the OSCAR system was the LOWeFLOW filter. Now, any other system could be used with the OSCAR.

The OSCAR-II systems is a treatment a dispersal technology. There are three components to the system: the treatment vessel, the pump chamber, and OSCAR dispersal. There are two options for the treatment vessel: a 1500 gallon septic tank (up to 500 gpd design flow) OR a vessel that meets the following four criteria:

  1. Must be listed on Washington State Department of Health’s List of Wastewater Containment Vessels.
  2. Must be a minimum of 1,000 gallons with one or more compartments.
  3. Must  have been tested under the National Sanitation Foundation standard 40 testing protocol and have a maximum of 100 CBOD5 and 75 TSS mg/l effluent treatment capability.
  4. Must be on Lowridge Onsite Technologies, LLC list of approved treatment vessels.

The OSCAR-II with a 1500 gallon septic tank is approved as a treatment level C (TLC) system and will need 24” of soil. This arrangement is referred to as OSCAR-TLC. When the treatment vessel is listed as treatment level B (TLB), the OSCAR-II can be installed with soil depths between 12” and 18”.

OSCAR-TLC can be used in place of a low-pressure distribution (LPD) system. OSCAR-TLC uses less than half the area as an LPD and is cost competitive.

OSCAR III

The OSCAR-III is an onsite sewage treatment and dispersal component for use with residential wastewater and meets treatment level B. Wastewater first passes through a septic tank and then into a dosing tank where it is dosed to the OSCAR coils. Effluent is micro dosed into a layer of ASTM C-33 sand where physical, biological, and chemical treatment processes remove organic compounds and pathogens from the waste stream. Treated liquid then migrates downward to the receiving soil where final discharge of treated wastewater enters the soil environment.

The OSCAR-III is comprised of a 12” layer of C-33 sand media and a series of custom manufactured Netafim Bioline drip tubing coils. The sand media is placed on a prepared soil surface creating a level surface for the coils. OSCAR-III coils are then placed on the sand media and then covered with another 6” of sand media. No other cover material is needed.

Minimum size tanks for design flow upto 500 gpd is a 1,500 gallon septic tank and a 1,000 gallon pump chamber. Coil arrangements and minimum sand depth for the OSCAR-III system are different than the criteria for OSCAR-II. Please refer to the OSCAR-III manuals and drawing files listed below in this section.
